Exhibition: Kate Boocock at Blue Oyster gallery, until June 13

29 May 2009

Exhibition- until June 13: Kate Boocock at Blue Oyster gallery, in the basement at 24b Moray PIace.

Challenging the familiar

DUNEDIN'S Blue Oyster Gallery presents two exhibitions this month -- "Aural Hysteric" by Melbourne-based artist Emma Morgan and "Onward!" by Wellington-based artist Kate Boocock.

"Onward!" is a sculptural vision for the future of Dunedin made from recycled and found materials. Construction materials will be sourced from around central Dunedin and an abstract future city will be assembled over the first few days of the exhibition.

"Aural Hysteric" uses the strained relations between members of Morgan's extended family as a starting point to examine the mundane melodrama of family feuds, the deep persistent ties we have to where we come from and the camera's promise to show us where that place of origin may be. From an archive of video interviews with relatives, Morgan has produced subjective, provocative and cynical accounts of familial history.

In conjunction with "Onward!" the Blue Oyster Gallery will run the first in a series of educational workshops. Students will be invited to construct their own future city sculptures, based on the concepts and methods used by Boocock. Free workshops will run on Tuesday, June 9, and Thursday, June 11, from 12.30pm and are suitable for class groups. Bookings are essential. Email education@blueoyster.org.nz to reserve a time for your class.

Di ffrench: Activating Ideas
14 March - 17 May 2009

Di ffrench: Activating Ideas is the first major survey of this artist's work since her untimely death a decade ago and brings together twenty years of work (1977-1997), which moves between sculpture, performance, photography and film.  One of the pioneering figures in the development of multi-media and cross-disciplinary studio practice this timely exhibition curated by Ann Kirker,  provides a new opportunity to reassess ffrench's strong and unique vision that consistently sought to address contemporary political, gender and social concerns.

Catharine Hodson: Touching the Unthinkable
At DPAG until 24 May 2009

Catharine Hodson's encounter and successful treatment for breast cancer three years ago was the starting point for Touching the Unthinkable.  As part of her research into this disease and its clinical treatment Hodson built up a rich body of information that included recording other women's experiences and that of friends, family and medical professionals.  Touching the Unthinkable is not only a response to this primary material it is an installation that deals with the representation and coding of illness as understood through a contemporary art context.

Major art events such as the Documenta in Kassel 2007, the Art Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane 2007, and the International Conference on Art in Society (to be held at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design in 2008), indicate a focus on visual arts education and its location within the community, through transferable knowledge, global mobility, network immediacy and resource competitiveness

Douglas Bagnall, Adam Hyde, Walker & Bromwich: Intertidal

Saturday 20 December 2008, 3.30 - 7.30pm (low tide 5.17pm)

Kamau Taurua / Quarantine Island, Dunedin

Sea Cadet ferry leaves the jetty adjacent to the Portobello Aquarium, end of Hatchery Road, Portobello, Otago Peninsula. The Sea Cadets will be ferrying the audience for the duration of the work, starting at 3.30pm and returning at 7.30pm

On a small island in the southern ocean four artists from near and afar gather to discover and develop new stories. At low tide the intertidal zone creates a fertile space for these stories to cast their shadows onto the earth. Through the collection of samples, their documentation, arrangement and analysis, knowledge will be cast upon the species and activities hosted by the island.
